Health care, or health insurance is the active management or care of health through the prevention, diagnosis, treatments, rehabilitation, and last-stage cure of disease, disorder, injury, or other severe physical and mental disabilities in the patient. A health care system should be able to deliver health services to a wide range of individuals with different needs. For instance, there are special health services for women, old people, and differently afflicted groups of people such as students with disabilities. However, health care delivery has been and continues to remain a challenge for health providers and organizations alike.
Primary care is the delivery of health care by general health professionals such as physicians, surgeons, nurses, and others. It also covers emergency, preventative, and hospital care. This is sometimes referred to as primary health care. Some types of primary care may include pediatrics, family practice, internal medicine, and home health care. Secondary health care is a specialty of primary care that involves the delivery of specialized health services to specific categories of people or to specific diseases or conditions. Examples of this include adult day care, geriatric therapy, and pediatric services.
Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and PPOs are examples of HMOs. A typical HMO is a fee-for-service plan that requires health care providers to belong to a specific network of providers. PPOs, on the other hand, allow patients to choose their health care providers either by locating them using a specialised search engine, or by going through a prescribed list of healthcare providers who accept Medicare. Most PPOs require health care providers to accept the service fees paid for by the patients. Unlike HMOs, PPOs usually do not restrict the type of health care providers one can use, although most limit the number of referrals one can make within a year.
There are a few differences between primary health care services and urgent care centers. While an emergency room may be the first point of contact for many patients, most doctors recommend that patients see an urgent care center instead. For example, a patient requiring specialized treatment for an illness that has no cure can only recover at a hospital if they have been diagnosed there by a specialist.
There are some hospitals that offer specialised care for specific illnesses or conditions such as cancer or heart disease. In these cases, a patient will often be referred to a health care specialist (usually the same hospital the doctor attended). Specialized health care professionals include cardiologists, orthopedists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and infectious disease specialists. Unlike urgent care centres, primary health care is generally less expensive, more convenient, and able to provide more comprehensive care for its patients. In most cases, primary health care health professionals to perform routine and preventive health care visits for patients’ overall health and medical histories, as well as minor procedures and tests.
